"Kumdis Lodge FAQ's"

What should I bring?
All fishing gear will be provided for those who need it, although most steelheaders prefer to bring their own gear. If you plan on wading, personal waders are nice (preferably Gore Tex), and felt soled boots are a must. We have some neoprenes and boots, but we can't guarantee sizes. We do have a supply of rain jackets but recommend that you bring your own just in case. Pack a good rain jacket and plan on layering your clothing. Bring a warm hat, warm socks and warm gloves (fingerless gloves work the best for steel-headers), sunglasses, bug repellant, sunscreen and a good book.

What are the species by season?

November through May are the best months for Steelhead, Cut Throat and Dolly Varden. June is off season for Steelheading on the rivers, but Cut Throat fishing is still excellent. June through to August, salmon and halibut are available off of Masset Inlet and the chuck. By the end of August, the Coho (Silvers) are beginning to show up in the Tlell river. In September and October, the rivers are in full swing for Coho (Silvers), and excellent for Cut Throat and Dolly Varden.

What is the best method of fishing?
Fly fishing, drift fishing and casting are all popular.

What should we use?
To catch Cut Throat: Flies- sink tip lines with polar shrimp, glow bugs, egg suckling leaches, sculpin and minnow imitations. Lures- 4-6 pound test, ultra light rods, small crocodile spoons, mepps spinners or roe.

To catch Steelhead: Flies- sink tips ranging from type IV to VI, 200 and 300 grain shooting heads. Bring floating line and strike indicators. Flies- leeches, skunks, comets, GP's or glow bugs. Drift gear- 10.5' casting rod with baitcaster or center pin reel, floats, pencil lead. 15 pound main line, 10-14 pound leader (1/0-2/0 bait hooks). Roe, gooey bobs, jensen eggs, pink worms, Colorado spinners, spoons (all provided).

To catch Coho: Flies- egg sucking leeches, medium/large bright streamers (chartreuse, pink, and copper) fished on type IV-VI sink tips.

What are the average sizes of the fish?
Cut Throat are usually between 1 and 2 pounds, with some up to 5 pounds, Steelhead are usually 10-14 pounds, with some up to 30 pounds. Coho are caught between 6 and 14 pounds, with some weighing in at up to 25 pounds and Pinks are anywhere from 3-6 pounds, with some up to 10 pounds.

What are the catch limits for Steelhead?
At Kumdis River Lodge we practice catch and release for all Steelhead.

What kinds of bugs are there at Kumdis River Lodge?
Mosquitoes and blackflies are around in the summer months only. The breeze on the water tends to keep them away.

Where can I buy a fishing license?
If you do not have a license, arrangements can be made to purchase one the nearby village of Port Clements.

How do I get to Kumdis River Lodge?
Kumdis River Lodge is located on Graham Island, the largest of the 150 islands that make up the archipelago that is the Queen Charlotte Islands. The Queen Charlotte Islands are located off the west coast of British Columbia, Canada, approximately 600 miles north of Vancouver, British Columbia.

There are a few options available to our guests. The most popular choice during the fall and winter for river salmon and steelhead fishing is travelling via a commercial flight from Vancouver to Graham or Moresby Island, where our guides will pick you up and transport you to Kumdis River Lodge.

During the summer months, a popular addition for our guests of Langara Island Lodge and Langara Fishing Lodge is to travel to Langara via our regular charter flight, and then, adding a few days to the end of their trip, explore the islands using Kumdis River Lodge as their base.

The final method of travel available is to take your own vehicle aboard the BC Ferry sailing between Prince Rupert and the village of Skidegate on Graham Island in the Queen Charlottes, driving north to Port Clements and on to the lodge. Guests opting for this method should consult our staff.

Are there other activities besides for fishing?
Visit the historic Skidegate or Port Clements Museums, beachcomb the Tlell or Tow Hill beaches, or visit Haida carvers and the villages of Skidegate and Old Masset Haida. Travel by 4-wheel drive to the otherwise inaccessible areas such as Rennell Sound, Rose Spit or the Yakoun River Valley. Experience the solitude that the Charlottes has to offer.

Other experiences are also available - accommodation and meals only, helicopter fishing that will fly you to many hidden remote fishing areas, Queen Charlotte Island exploration, native Haida art museums and carvers, and guided deer hunting can also be arranged. View the scenic Kumdis estuary where ducks, geese, cranes, and other indigenous birds make their home. It is a bird lovers paradise!
